Mary Austin Harris

Mrs. Mary Austin Harris, age 92 of Geraldine, Alabama, died Tuesday, December 24, 2024 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. Visitation will be Friday, December 27th from 11:00 am until 1:30 pm. Funeral service will begin at 1:30 pm all at The Rock Church (formerly Geraldine Methodist) with burial to follow at Geraldine Cemetery. The Rev’s Mike Keeble, Johnny Minick, and Cale Colvin will officiate. The family wishes to thank Aveanna Hospice and staff with special thanks for the compassionate care given by Erica Wynn, Brandy Smith, and caretakers Cherie Gray, Marilyn Thomas, Stacey Batchelor, and Jodi Alexander. She is survived by her loving husband of 8 years, Wymer Harris; sons, Bobby (Benita) Austin and Russ Austin all of Geraldine; daughter, Sharon (Walter) Watts of Fort Payne; 5 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren. Stepdaughters, Jennifer (Steve) Jordan of Chattanooga, TN, and Cynthia Harris of Fyffe, AL. 5 step grandchildren; 6 step great grandchildren. Sister, Nell Light of Chattanooga, TN, sister-in-law, Bobbie Hall of Geraldine and a host of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Harris was born on February 8, 1932 in Geraldine, AL. She was a graduate of Geraldine High School, Snead State College, and Auburn University, with a Master’s Degree from UAB. Mrs. Harris was a beloved teacher in DeKalb County Schools, with many years spent at Geraldine Elementary where she helped shape the lives of countless students until her retirement. She was a member of The Rock Church (Geraldine Methodist) where she served in many capacities through her lifetime. She has also enjoyed the many friends and worship at Highway Church of God with her husband Wymer. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, Robert (Bob) Austin; son, Dave Austin; parents, Clodie and Artie Hall; brothers, James Hall and Don Hall, sisters; Juanette Hardman and Peggy Cochran along with a number of brothers and sisters-in-law.
